Sophie, Countess of Wessex, with Prince Edward

The Countess of Wessex has visited Prince Philip in hospital.

Sophie - the wife of Philip's son Prince Edward - went to see her father-in-law on Tuesday (11.06.13) as he recovers from an exploratory operation he underwent on Friday (07.06.13).

The mother-of-two arrived at the London Clinic in Harley Street carrying what appeared to be a cool bag, suggesting she brought the 92-year-old royal some food to snack on.

Sophie - who raises, Louise, nine, and James, five, with Edward - looked beautiful in a floral dress and blazer and smiled at photographers and onlookers as she went inside.

Her visit comes after Philip's wife Queen Elizabeth and Sophie's husband Prince Edward went to see the elderly royal on Monday (10.06.13).

Edward, the Earl of Wessex, went to see his father for 20 minutes and as he left he assured reporters and well-wishers his dad is doing "well".

Philip was admitted to hospital last Thursday (06.06.13) ahead of his scheduled laparotomy, which was carried out under general anaesthetic, on Friday (07.06.13). It is not known why he had the operation - which was scheduled after a routine health check-up discovered something unusual - but the results are due back later this week.

He is expected to remain in hospital for two weeks and then will spend two months at Buckingham Palace recuperating.
