CornerShop initiative uses latest technology to make shopping easier

The CornerShop initiative works by making your smartphone a "remote control" to use within the store.

When you arrive, your phone will detect the Bluetooth sensors and will welcome you to the shop, whilst when it comes to shopping for groceries, you are able to preselect the items on the app or you can use the screens in store or the app to browse through different options.

The app detects a person's location using lidar sensors and bluetooth beacons to give you the most accurate information for what you're looking at on the physical shelf.

As well as the usual products in store, there is a vertical garden which allows you to select small parts of a plant you might need, rather than waste the whole thing - such as one mint leaf or one basil leaf.

Steve Hewett, vice president at Capgemini Invent, told BBC Click: "We've got a lot of computer learning models going on. So as people engage in the store and we learn their preferences and their behaviours, we're able to vary what they experience when they come to different touch points. We don't just use simplistic 'because you bought X, you'll suddenly get Y', we take in the different combinations of signals we get ... When customers are on board and in the store, it's a very open dialogue we have with them. You share X and you share your location and we'll do this for you."
