Are these the dreamiest Airbnbs ever?

Instead of bookings, would-be tourists are making wish lists – catalogues of 'saved' properties they can come back to at a later date. In descending order, these are the 10 most wished for properties on Airbnb, which can expect a crowd at their digital door when tourism finally creaks back into gear…

1. Private Pool Villa – Bali, Indonesia

There aren't many areas of Bali that remain unspoiled by tourism's sprawl, but this luxury hilltop villa is in one of them. The most wish-listed property on the whole of Airbnb, this tranquil villa serves up stunning sea views from its elegantly furnished terrace and perfectly pristine infinity pool.

2. Exceptional Property – Santa Catarina, Brazil

This elegant, glass-fronted beach house doesn't lack for confidence, and it's not hard to see why. The perfect place for an aquatic adventure, you can enjoy private access to the Atlantic, catch some waves at a number of nearby surf spots, or trek inland to the magnificent cascades of Iguazu Falls.

3. Hector Cave House – Santorini, Greece

A classic Santorini cave house, this whitewashed dwelling occupies one of the most coveted cliffs on the island. A stone's throw from the old castle in prime position for the famous Santorini sunset, visitors can expect a level of romance normally reserved for Mamma Mia.

4. Eco Bamboo Home – Bali, Indonesia

We're back in Bali for number four, with a classic eco-build that's become all the rage in recent years. Hidden among the mountainous foothills of Gunung Agung volcano, this rustic, riverside hut is surrounded by rice fields, and crafted entirely from bamboo.

5. Underground Hygge – Orondo, USA

Tucked away in a remote corner of Washington state, this cosy bolthole takes clear inspiration from a certain New Zealand film set. From the iconic, round green doorway to the swinging garden gate – you don't have to be a hobbit to live here, but it helps.

6. Balian Treehouse With Beautiful Pool – Bali, Indonesia

If there's one takeaway from this list, it's that would-be tourists have Bali on the brain. This luxury treehouse comes complete with palm groves, a private pool, and is a three-minute hop to the beach.

7. Private Pool House With Amazing Views – Los Angeles, USA

It's not got the world's snappiest name, but this hillside hideaway in southern California lives up to its billing and then some. A stone's throw from Hollywood and 45 minutes from Disneyland, the private pool overlooks the leafy boulevards of Northeast LA, and the patio is the perfect place for a barbie.

8. Moderne Apartment – Akureyri, Iceland

A quiet, wood-panelled eco-home in the northern recesses of Iceland, this remote rental is the perfect place to get back in touch with nature – and away from everything else. Just make sure you pack for the season. Winter brings skiing, dog-sledding and the aurora borealis; summer yields hiking, midnight sun, and the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course.

9. Unique Architecture Cave House – Santorini, Greece

Our second Santorini cave house is just as postcard-worthy as the first – albeit with a less illustrious interior. Situated in the coastal town of Oia – one of the most famous beauty spots in the Mediterranean – the house was once the town bakery, and offers one of the best ocean views on the island.

A charming riad in one of the safest parts of town, this traditional Moroccan dwelling combines creature comforts with time-honoured cultural quirks, like a well-furnished central courtyard and complimentary mint tea. Guests can order classic Moroccan meals in-house, or wander the nearby souks.
