Buckthorns House, Upper Largo, Fife

Join Caroline & Christopher Trotter at Buckthorns House, Upper Largo, Fife, an old  farmhouse with amazing views over  the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh. Situated 20 minutes from St Andrews, there is a lovely walk from the house down to the local beach. 

Guest are welcome to relax in the drawing room beside the wood burning stove with ample music choice and reading material. Both Caroline and Christopher are keen cooks using only fresh ingredients and local produce where possible, including their own homemade bread, jams, chutneys and eggs from their hens. Their Jackadoodle - Tilly, welcomes well behaved dogs - no cat or hen chasers please - (£39/€47 or less pppn).

Roughmoor Farm, Silk Mills Road, Taunton, Somerset

Gill Richmond is host to a large, comfortable, grade 2 listed, historic farmhouse on the outskirts of Taunton in Somerset. The farm has 11 bedrooms, four bathrooms, six receptions rooms, a games room and 1.7 acres of gardens. It produces organic fruit and vegetables and its seven chickens provide fresh free range eggs daily.

The farm has been sensitively renovated in the last 18 months and is now comfortable and warm with wood burning stoves in many of the rooms. A variety of single, double and dormitory style rooms are available, they can cater for large groups as the farmhouse kitchen is large and well-equipped.

The farm is a 20 minute walk from Taunton town centre across the fields, or ten minutes by shuttle bus. Gill and her family have a good knowledge of the area and can advise on local attractions. They take pride in looking after their guests and treating them as friends - (£39/€47 or less pppn).

Scalehouse Farm, Penrith, Cumbria 

Pamela Bonnick is the host at Scalehouse Farm, located in a peaceful hamlet in the Eden Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty and little known, so very quiet.  The house, once a working farm, is very old, possibly pre.1500. 

Now a cosy home with chickens and Fell ponies. Pamela enjoys cooking, especially using the local Watermill organic flour which makes great bread.  The views from the house and land, at 800ft, are stunning. There are lots of great walks and access to the Fell, where the bird life is abundant.  The area is just off the C2C cycle route and on the Pennine cycle way.  Plenty of bike storage, room to park and you can even bring your horse - (£39/€47 or less pppn).

Coachman's Cottage, Edinburgh

Coachman’s Cottage, set in a lovely 17th Century courtyard just outside Edinburgh – only seven miles from Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street. The hosts have two lovely bedrooms with ensuite, private bathroom, shower and lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

They can accommodate five people and welcome dogs and children. Guest have a private entrance and access to a mini kitchen, enjoy sitting out in the garden in summer or by a log fire in winter. The hosts are happy to share their local knowledge. Visit the Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo, Rosslyn Chapel (five minutes away) and the Pentland Hills Country Park (two minutes drive).

Lots of walk trails are accessible from the doorstep in the lovely surrounding woodland, along the River Esk or in the Pentlands - (£39/€47 or less pppn).

Wyards, Alton, Hampshire 

Farmhouse built in 1691, frequently visited by Jane Austen, as it was the home of her niece Anna and is a few minutes’ drive from Chawton - Jane's house.  It is in the heart of historic Hampshire with Winchester a short drive and Selborne the home of Gilbert White and a wonderful exhibition devoted to Captain Oates from the ill fated Scott expedition only a few minutes away.  

Guests can enjoy a double bedroom with en-suite Jacuzzi bathroom, swimming pool, tennis court, woodland for walks, beautiful gardens including water garden, pond, animals.  There is also fresh and delicious, home-cooked food, much of which is grown in the vegetable garden - (£50/€58 or more pppn).

Aeron Parc, Llangeitho, Ceredigion 

Traditional Welsh farmhouse, built in late 1800s, surrounded by farmland with fields bordering the River Aeron. Twin bedded room in light annex with en-suite toilet and shower, with more accommodation in main house.

Meals shared in farmhouse, prepared by an enthusiastic and experienced cook, using mainly organic ingredients.  Further accommodation for up to eight visitors is available in adjacent barn. Easy parking and on bus route - (£39/€47 or less pppn).
