Brits should hop across the channel to shave pounds off their Christmas gift bills, according to Travelex.

Research carried out by the leading foreign exchange specialist shows that Brits could save hundreds of pounds on their Christmas lists for friends and family by making the short trip to France and taking advantage of the favourable exchange rate.

With the Pound up seven per cent against the Euro compared to last year - just short of the best rates for over four years - Brits can grab some bargain gifts across the Channel. Shoppers exchanging £500 now will be getting over £40 more than they would have done at the same point in 2011.

The savings are increased by lower retail prices at many French stores. Travelex compared prices for the most in-demand Christmas 2012 gifts with items in shopping centres across France, and found they are on average of £33 less than the same products in the UK.

There are some cracking deals to be had on technology, in particular laptops and TVs, with savings of over £100 on certain products.

Elvin Eldić from Travelex said: “We’re all looking to make our money go further this Christmas, and with the Pound still strong against the Euro, it’s a great time to shop for presents in France.

“To get the best value, bargain-hunters should order their Euros online, and then collect it from any of our stores - we’re conveniently located at Dover ferry terminals and Eurotunnel. That way, those crossing the channel will have even more cash for stocking fillers.”

Some of the most in-demand products, such as the new FIFA 13 game for PlayStation can be snapped up at a bargain price. According to Travelex research, the PlayStation 3 160Gb Console with FIFA 13, can be purchased over in France for nearly 30 per cent cheaper than here in the UK.

The trip over to France won’t break the bank this Christmas either. Return trips from Dover to Calais start at just £15 each way, and average trips take just over 60 minutes. Eurotunnel have a half-price sale on day trips for just £22 as well, so savvy shoppers can ensure they are getting a great value deal on their travel.

Shoppers preferring to travel by rail could choose Eurostar, with single fares from London to Calais coming in at just over £50.

If you are planning to make the trip over the channel, get the best value ahead of Christmas by ordering your currency online at www.Travelex.co.uk. Travelex also offers an online Price Promise, which guarantees that if you find a better price, they’ll refund the difference.
