New research from sunshine.co.uk has revealed the top 10 places that Britons abandoning the UK for New Year’s Eve will be celebrating; with New York being the number one choice for those not wishing to spend it at home.

After receiving a considerable number of bookings for holidays that will take place over the time in which New Year’s Eve falls this year, www.sunshine.co.uk, an independent travel agency in the UK, has conducted research to find out where people who are planning on spending New Year’s Eve abroad will be celebrating.

www.sunshine.co.uk has received a high volume of bookings this year for holidays that will fall over New Year’s Eve; with the top destinations according to the site for New Year’s Eve holidays being New York, Thailand and France.

Further to this, the site polled 1,427 people, all of whom planned to be abroad for New Year’s Eve, to find out where exactly they were going.

According to the poll, the top 10 destinations abroad where Britons plan to spend New Year’s Eve 2012 are as follows:

1. New York, USA

2. Koh Phangan, Thailand

3. Paris, France

4. Barcelona, Spain

5. Las Vegas, USA

6. Sydney, Australia

7. Tokyo, Japan

8. Venice, Italy

9. Toronto, Canada

10.  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When asked why they were celebrating overseas, as opposed to at home in the UK, 56 per cent said that New Year’s Eve was ‘always disappointing in the UK’. When asked if they’d ever celebrated New Year’s Eve abroad before this year 72 per cent said no.

Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “I always think there’s a great amount of pressure to make sure you do something spectacular on New Year’s Eve, to see in the next year in style. However, this means it can often be disappointing, as you build something up just to wind up having a few pints in your local.

“Planning a holiday that falls on New Year’s Eve is a great idea and there are so many cities around the world that celebrate in unbeatable style. Sydney, New York and Tokyo are well known party-hotspots around New Year, but you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on a break.

"For example, you can get some great bargains for destinations like Thailand at this time of year and you’re sure to have an unforgettable time,” he said.
