More than half (57 per cent) of cruisers would like to go on a ‘tech-free’ cruise, according to new research from www.bonvoyage.co.uk.

Just under two fifths explained that they’d welcome the opportunity for a ‘detox’ from their usual tech-filled environment, as part on on-going research into the cruising habits of Britons.

The study of 1,324 British cruisers across the UK discovered more about what kinds of cruises they may like to see making waves in the future. All respondents had been on a cruise in the past three years, and were polled about their feelings towards certain types of cruise holidays.

The respondents were initially asked ‘Would you consider going on a tech-free cruise?’ to which 57 per cent answered ‘yes’.

These respondents were then asked to explain why they’d welcome the idea of ditching their tech products whilst out at sea. Nearly two fifths claimed that they’d like the opportunity to ‘detox’ from their usual tech-filled environment; whilst 18 per cent admitted that they found the presence of tech gadgets on board ‘stressful.’

A further 23 per cent admitted not being able to ‘switch off’ whilst on holiday with high-tech gadgets around them and over a quarter (27 per cent) explained the fact that high tech gadgets were ‘unnecessary’ on board.

Steph Curtin, Cruise Development Manager of bonvoyage.co.uk, said: “Holidays are usually the perfect opportunity to relax and get away from our daily routines, including the gadgets that we all use for work and in our spare time. It’s not surprising to see that the majority of cruisers would jump on-board with a tech-free cruise.  Nowadays, most people will happily admit to being addicted to their gadgets, and rarely have the chance to get away from them!”

The respondents were then showed a list of gadgets and were asked to choose which gadgets they’d find the most difficult to stay away from, should they venture on a ‘tech-free’ cruise. According to the research, the top five gadgets that cruisers would find most difficult to leave on dry-land were as follows:

  1. Mobile Phone - 72%
  2. Laptop / Tablet - 53%
  3. MP3 Players/ iPod - 41%
  4. Kindle - 32%
  5. Handheld game console - 21%

Steph continued: “Cruise holidays are ideal when you want to be ‘tech free’, as they’re the perfect opportunity to truly get away from it all. If you really feel like you need to be connected, you always have the option of venturing online when the ship stops at port, or by making use of the internet café and Wi-Fi connections that many cruise ships offer. That way, you’re never more than a moment away from technology, should you be feeling withdrawal symptoms!”
