Sunbed

Sunbed

It would seem that the sunshine on holidays abroad is not enough for some holidaymakers, as new research by an online independent travel agency has revealed a rise in the number of women using sunbeds, despite their dangers, in the run up to going abroad, with the aim of achieving a ‘base tan’.

www.sunshine.co.uk polled 1,927 women, aged 21 and over, from around the UK. All respondents were asked about their usual holiday preparations for hot overseas breaks and everyone taking part had been abroad on a holiday in the past 12 months.

So what if you look pale on a trip abroad; I’m sure you’ll be in the same boat as many other people there ... Holidaymakers should always put their health and safety before vanity.

Almost a fifth of respondents admitted to using a sunbed before their holiday abroad, and the average time spent getting a pre-travel ‘base tan’ was 30 minutes.

Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “Holidays shouldn’t be about getting a sun tan; they are about relaxing and spending time with family, friends or loved ones.

“There’re no two ways about it – using sunbeds is a dangerous habit and it’s something that should be avoided at all costs.”

When asked why they had wanted to build up a ‘base tan’ before going on holiday abroad, 62 per cent admitted that they didn’t want to appear ‘pale’ on their first day of the holiday, whilst 14 per cent claimed that they thought it would prevent them from getting sunburn on holiday.

A further 19 per cent said a base tan helped them to get a darker tan, when on holiday.

All respondents were asked if they thought using a sunbed was dangerous, to which two fifths said yes.  When asked if they had been sunburnt on their last holiday abroad, a staggering 77 per cent of those taking part said yes they had.

Chris added: “So what if you look pale on a trip abroad; I’m sure you’ll be in the same boat as many other people there on their first day or two.

“Holidaymakers should always put their health and safety before vanity.”
