When Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why came to a close, many thought that it was all over. It is after all based on the book of the same name by Jay Asher, so what else is there to tell? The show has gone on to become one of the most popular in the streaming service’s existence, but isn’t without its critics in the world of mental health, who have accused it of glamorising suicide and causing triggering effects for anybody who may be going things close to the series’ central character, Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford).

Now though, there’s one particular and hugely dark theory doing the rounds which could lead into a second season, completely original from Asher’s novel and straying away from Hannah’s story, whilst still involving some of the characters who were essential to her tale.

In the final moments of the series, we see Tyler Down (Devin Druid) – the kid who likes to take pictures of his classmates whether or not they give him consent – stockpiling a huge pile of weapons in his bedroom. Almost caught by his mother, he quickly puts them away and tells her to value his privacy, and that’s the last time we see him with the firearms in the series. That’s not his final scene, however…

In his final scene, we see Tyler removing the photograph of Alex Standall (Miles Heizer) from a room of photographs that seems to include everybody (apart from the student counsellor) that were included in Hannah’s tapes. It’s worth noting that everybody included in the photographs have also wronged Tyler at some point; Clay for example shared a photograph of Tyler nude with the school after he refused to delete pictures he had of Hannah after her death. He wanted Tyler to feel the same invasion of privacy that Hannah felt during her time being stalked by the student.

Now there’s talk that these photographs could be a hit list of students Tyler wants to take out for good. With a variety of weapons and ammunition, he certainly has the means to end the lives of those he thinks has irreparably ruined his own life. Alex was one of those people, but as we see in a flashback scene, the youngster actually stood up for Tyler when he was being picked on by Montgomery (Timothy Granaderos). Could this move see Alex safe from Tyler’s wrath?

We also hear that Alex ‘shot himself in the head’ during the show’s final moments. Now, some theorists believe that Tyler was actually the person to shoot Alex and THAT’S why he was removing him from this ‘hit list’, but we think with the included flashback of Alex’s kindness to Tyler, it was simply a case of Tyler removing him from the list and not even yet knowing of Alex’s condition. Viewers are alerted via the show’s dialogue that Alex is still alive despite the gunshot wound, but he’s in a critical condition.

So, if we’re to get a second season of 13 Reasons Why, could we be faced with a school shooting situation? The show is clearly unafraid to approach what are usually considered taboo topics, and school shootings in America certainly fall under that umbrella. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one…

13 Reasons Why is available to stream in full now on Netflix.
