Ground-breaking five-part television series The Trial started on Channel 4 tonight (May 21), but with it came a whole lot of questions. Here are 5 we have after watching the first episode of the new series…

5. Who’s In On It Being An Experiment?

Channel 4 never explicitly stated who was involved in bringing this fake story to trial, so it was never made clear exactly who knew it was all an experiment? Do the jurors involved think they’re a part of a real trial and making history with it being the first televised, or are they aware that they’re simply part of an elaborate project designed for television? Is the defence attorney for the actor playing the accused Simon Davis aware this is all fake, or does he really think he’s defending someone on the stand for murder? With some of the conversations that took place during the first episode, we’re not sure exactly what’s going on.

4. Do Jurors Really Get That Many Breaks?

The amount of breaks the jurors got in The Trial seemed excessive. It looked as though they were given time to have a snack or meal and a drink after every piece of evidence was presented, or witness was called to the stand. Of course, there’s the possibility this was done by producers purposely to force them to engage and speak to one another more than usual about the case, gaining their insights into the case and getting opinions on a more frequent basis than usual to explore the dynamics of a British jury.

3. Why Did Simon Think It Was A Heart Attack?

We’ve seen the injuries sustained by Carla upon her death. There are very obvious signs of strangulation on her neck, as well as huge marks where she’s been pushed and held down. So why did Simon think she’d suffered from a heart attack when he found her? This could be a damning oversight…

2. Whose Was Carla’s Baby?

Carla was eight weeks pregnant when she died, with either Simon Davis’ baby, or the unborn child of current boyfriend Lewis Skinner. We now know that Skinner was unaware of her pregnancy when she died – or at least he claims – and Simon says that text messages he was sent by Carla suggest she was planning on telling him she was pregnant. But was she going to tell him she was pregnant with his child, or that she’d be having a child with another man? Is that the final conversation she had with Simon before he killed her? Could Lewis have killed her if he found out she was pregnant with Simon’s baby? There’s so much to consider.

1. Is He Guilty?

Of course, the number one question is if fictional character Simon Davis is guilty of murdering his wife, Carla Davis? Could he have found out his wife was pregnant with somebody else’s baby and, if so, would this push him to commit one of the worst crimes imaginable? Or was he jilted after the pair looked to be reconciling their relationship, which then tipped him over the edge? We’ll find out over the next four nights.

The Trial continues each night on Channel 4 until its conclusion on Thursday, May 25.
