NOTE: Spoilers

For those fans of the Game of Thrones television series who may not have read the books the show is based on, this week's episode 'The Lion and the Rose' proved to be shocking, entertaining and joyful.

With King Joffrey murdered - poisoned at his own wedding feast - the internet immediately went into meltdown with theories about who was behind what has been dubbed the Purple Wedding.

We've chosen five suspects who we think are the most likely to have put an end to the boy's reign.

SUSPECT NUMBER ONE - TYRION LANNISTER

After being belitted time after time again, nobody could blame Tyrion if he eventually snapped. We can't help but think he's smarter though than to kill his nephew in front of hundreds of witnesses, without having an escape plan or a way to wriggle out of being killed in Joffrey's name.

SUSPECT NUMBER TWO - SANSA STARK

Joffrey has called for the killing of her father, and her brother, mother and most of those she held dear. She once fell in love with a monster, and he's proven to ruin her life and happiness with every opportunity presented to him. She has more than enough reason to want it all to come to an end, but would she be brave enough to go through with such a plan?

SUSPECT NUMBER THREE - TYWIN LANNISTER

He's longing for power, and has no trouble in cutting down his family members to get it. With a struggle to keep ahold on Joffrey's actions, it would prove advantageous for Tywin, as Hand of the King, to bring Joffrey's reign to an end and mould Tommen - next in line for the Throne - exactly the way he wants.

SUSPECT NUMBER FOUR - LADY OLENNA TYRELL

Olenna just seems suspicious. She had that chat with Sansa about how awful it is to kill a man at a wedding, but there would be a certain sense of satisfaction if the sassiest woman from Highgarden managed to take down the bully King.

SUSPECT NUMBER FIVE - MARGAERY TYRELL

She's now the Queen of King's Landing, but what power she holds over the Kingdom still remains to be seen. With Tommen Baratheon in the frame for the Throne lineage, will all of her efforts now be for nothing? She's married two Kings, and consumated neither marriages. She has however kept her head up until this point, and that, at a Game of Thrones wedding, is something to be proud of.

There is always the possibility that it could be someone else entirely - Joffrey had no lack in people who wouldn't mind seeing his head on a pike - so we have a feeling this is one that will play out for quite some time yet.

Game of Thrones continues Monday, 9pm on Sky Atlantic and Sky Atlantic HD.
