Fans of 'The Great British Bake Off' on BBC Two were left on tenterhooks until the very last moments in last night's final show of the series.

After taking part in the final three challenges they'd face, Ruby, Frances and Kimberley all took turns in making themselves shine.

It was Ruby who created the perfect picnic 'hamper' pie, complete with patchwork and intricate lattice work. Surprisingly, Kimberly's pie turned out as a bit of a soggy catastrophe, and Frances was middle of the ground with her "ten minutes from perfection" rainbow pie - also styled like a hamper.

For the first time in the show's history, the technical challenge was pretzels - six savoury and six sweet. Not one of the contestants really knew the shape of a pretzel, but Kimberly's technique came closest to the real thing. Her crisp crunch and flavours took her the technical win, and it was looking as if we were coming down to a two-horse race.

The final showstopper - a three-tier wedding cake. Ruby opted to go against the norm with her cakes colours and her design really did need some work. Kimberly's tiered treat most closely resembled a classic wedding cake, but left a little something to be desired.

However, it was Frances who astonished the judges and her fellow contestants when she presented her Midsummer Night's Dream - decorated with beetroot hearts and dried pineapple flowers to represent confetti - and as a whole, her stylish and exciting creations each and every week.

Proving she had listened to Paul Hollywood's criticism of her lack of substance in the earlier days of the competition, she finally delivered on all bases, and so it was to be that Frances Quinn was crowned the winner of 'The Great British Bake Off' 2013.

Hollywood said: "She not only gave us the style, she gave us the substance too and that cake actually, each layer, superb."

His judging partner, Mary Berry added: "Frances has many qualities, she has attention to detail, she's got excellent flavours, her baking improved as each week went by, we're very proud of her."

'The Great British Bake Off' will return in 2014, in its new slot on BBC One.
