American Horror Story: Freak Show returned from a two week break in America this week, and not one but two major characters' stories came to end in shocking fashion.

"Once you die, you're dead" Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly at the beginning of this season, and now Kathy Bates has opened up to EW about saying goodbye to Ethel - one of the two characters who met their end.

Asked if Ethel could return in flashbacks, Kathy replied: "Well this is American Horror Story so anything can happen! That's all I can say about that."

Explaining that the scene in which Denis O'Hare had to set up a faux suicide with her and wrap chains around her head, she explained how she and Jessica Lange are "always laughing about what happens to our characters and everything. It's just bizarre. It all makes us laugh."

She also insisted that she loved to work with Evan Peters, stating: "I think he's one of these actors that are really up and coming and it's been a real honour to work with him."

Going on to say that the crew eventually got her beard piece down to just 3 pieces, she said with "really great glue" it goes on "in about 20 minutes", and it was a lot of fun to work with something like that.

Moving her sights onto season five, EW asked if there is hope to see her turn up next time round.

"Well of course there is. I love Ryan. I love working with him and for him. One thing I didn't get a chance to say in my Emmy speech is that after Harry's Law and then I had gotten sick with breast cancer, I was really in the dumps. I was really like: 'I'll never work again. I'm too old. Blah blah blah.' Lo and behold, I get this amazing call from Ryan to come in and meet with him. He created these wonderful parts for me to play and I'll forever be in his debt for that. He's rejuvenated my career in a way that I have a young audience now and that's fabulous! So why wouldn't I want to come back for more of that?"
