Adam Woodyatt is happy after EastEnders

The 54-year-old actor - who played Ian Beale on the primetime BBC soap for thirty six years from 1985 until 2021 before returning for a cameo appearance in 2022 – doesn’t miss the "intense" schedule and admits he’s happy to move on from the show that made him a household name.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: “It is very intense, it’s hard work, it’s long hours. It doesn’t give you a lot of time to do anything else. You can’t plan doing anything else.

“Whereas now I’ve suddenly got a life outside and I’m loving it.”

According to Adam, no actor wants to play the same role for the rest of their life and since leaving ‘EastEnders’ he’s been staring in theatre shows such as 'My Fair Lady', allowing him to explore various roles.

He added: “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. I don’t know where life is going to take me.

“I don’t know what my next job is going to be. I could end up doing loads of stage work. I could end up doing films.

“I’ll see what happens. At the moment I am quite happy.

“I don’t think you ever fully leave ‘EastEnders’. Even if I never go back people will always think of me as Ian Beale.”

In a previous interview with Wales Online, Adam discussed his future with the long-running soap opera and said 'never say never' to the idea of a retur, but he insisted it would have to be a fitting storyline.

He said: “The story has to be right, they’ve also got to come up with a story and it has to be at a time when I’m not doing something else.

“I keep getting asked this but it is very difficult to answer it because there is no answer.

“Doors keep opening and I keep going through these other doors.”
