The 65-year-old quizzer thinks the programme and it’s spin-off, ‘Beat the Chasers’, is so successful because the presenter is well suited to the format and able to think quickly in order to respond to the experts with a joke.

Asked why the shows work so well, she told Best magazine: “Great formats and a brilliant host!

“You can tune into ‘The Chase’ at any point during the hour, catch up with it very quickly and be absorbed by it.

"But our secret weapon is Bradley Walsh – everybody loves Bradley.

"He was made to do these programmes – they just suit him down to the ground.

“I love being able to throw out a bizarre fact and he will run with it and make a joke out of it.

“I love the way he latches on to the things I say.”

The Governess doesn’t believe she’s the best quizzer around but her lack of nerves makes her suited to the high-pressure environment of TV.

She said: “I finished 108th in The World Quizzing Championships earlier this year, which is a long way down the pecking order.

“I think the reason I am on TV and other potentially better quizzers aren’t is that I can hold my nerve.

“Nerves – or lack of them – have always been a strength of mine.

“I’ve got nerves of steel but other people who are brilliant quizzers probably let anxiety get the better of them, perhaps when they are auditioning in front of a TV camera or for a radio show.

“I remember being on ‘Brain of Britain’ on the radio in the 1990s and the music started and I was excited and focused, I didn’t feel nervous at all.

“I think you only feel anxious if you haven’t properly prepared for something, and I do prepare well – always.”
