The 49-year-old politician found himself at the bottom of the show's leaderboard on Saturday (22.10.16) after he almost dropped his partner Katya Jones in a daring lift, but the professional dancer has come to his defence, saying he gets "too dizzy" and the training is "tiring mentally".

She said: "It's tiring mentally - you can't take that away. He has to sit down, he has to have his tea with milk.

"When he's tired he tries to distract me with a tea break. I make his tea. He says, 'Right, tea break!' and so I go off and make him a tea.

"And then he gets too dizzy from all the spins and turns so he has to lie down and starts feeling sick. He just gives me an evil look like, 'Oh my god'."

And Katya also revealed that the former shadow chancellor has been making rude jokes during training, in an attempt to distract her from the task at hand.

She added to The Sun newspaper: "I laugh all the time but sometimes they are not appropriate jokes so I couldn't say what he says.

"Just silly things and then he breaks out into his own moves and it's just hilarious.

"Dad dancing is his character so I don't want him to lose that but of course the technique is important.

"But I don't want him to lose his own little style which is great really.

"He doesn't see that it's a massive improvement but he is improving so much."

Despite the issues with the lift - which head judge Len Goodman described as "dodgy" - the pair successfully made it through to next week's Halloween special, after the public voted to save them from the dreaded dance-off.

'Strictly Come Dancing's Halloween special will air on BBC One on Saturday October 29.
