Vying for its spot on the list of premium cable networks that introduce shows too risky or extreme for traditional networks, Cinemax introduced Banshee to the world a few years back and it has since managed to help build that reputation for the channel.

Taking the story of an ex-con - played by Antony Starr - who takes on a fake identity as sheriff in a small town, the show managed to break records with its ratings during its premiere and then soared even higher when going into season two.

Now though according to TVLine, the series is to come to its natural conclusion with its fourth season, coming to screens in 2016 and consisting of eight episodes. Unconfirmed by Cinemax, the show's producers have reportedly known that the end has been coming for a while and because of that, have managed to put together a satisfying ending.

What's special about this story is the fact that the Banshee creators will be able to end the show on their own terms, wrapping up the narrative in a way they see fit instead of being cancelled and forced to end prematurely.

With some holes to fill though in terms of original programming, the end of Banshee could see a new heavy hitter come into play on the Cinemax network. The Knick will remain and Quarry is priming up to be a success for the network, so perhaps now really is the best time to say goodbye.

Banshee returns to Cinemax in the US next year for its final season.
