Ben Whishaw has picked up the lead role in BBC Two's new drama series London Spy.

The actor takes on the role of Danny, an "innocent, young romantic" in the five-part thriller, filming for which begins in October.

The series comes from Tom Rob Smith, who commented: "Ben Whishaw is quite simply one of the best actors in the country. It's an extraordinary privilege, as a writer, to have him play the lead."

BBC's Head of Independent Drama, Polly Hill added: "This is a beautifully written love story, caught up in a spy thriller. A wonderfully complex and surprising story, of one man's search for the truth."

London Spy is set on a street in London housing the Secret Intelligence Service HQ on one side of the road, with the gay clubbing scene headquarters on the opposite.

It'll air on BBC Two next year.

Ben had recently insisted he doesn't worry being typecast because he is open about being a homosexual man.

"It's not a consideration for me, because gay characters are as varied and different as heterosexual characters.

"I've played all sorts of different people, so I don't see the need to balance them out."
