The 54-year-old presenter is giving up her lucrative TV career to concentrate on her dream to fly solo around the world.

She said: "I have been doing this for 30 years. It no longer holds the same thrill. I am at an age where I want to do other things. I am 55 in December. I don't want to end up in a studio for six weeks at a time, bashing out 150 new quiz shows. I did 5,000 of them."

Carol is planning to fly around the world "via Germany, across the Middle East to India and Thailand and then Russia, Alaska and American before crossing the Atlantic via Greenland and Iceland".

She has reconciled with her partner, former Red Arrows pilot Graham Duff, who has been helping her to prepare for her solo flight.

She said: "He's quite gentle really."

Carol also revealed that part of the reason she is stepping back from TV is to spend more time with her family.

The former 'Countdown' star told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "I want much more time with my two kids now and my mum, who is 87. I am a carer. I have three dependents.

"Mum had her third cancer this year, a huge malignant melanoma on the top of her head, so she's got this massive skin graft."
