The 'Springwatch' star was left "totally devastated" at the end of last year after his miniature poodle Itchy, who was 13 years old, tragically passed away, but he has since decided that he wants his remains mixed in with his pet pooches and his other four-legged friend Scratchy, who is still alive, and scattered in the New Forest.

Speaking to the Daily Mail newspaper, he said: "It has been a very miserable. We've had a crap time since December. I'm going to have Itchy cremated and eventually his brother Stratchy. And eventually me too. And then our ashes are going to get all mixed together and thrown out in the woods in a favourite spot in the New Forest so that we can be something together. I love them so much I want to be part of them and I want them to part of me in this lifetime. I am not spiritual in any sort of way.

"All I know is that we are all made of carbon, and if their carbon mixes with mine it could become a blade of grass that gets eaten by a caterpillar that gets eaten by a blue tit that gets eaten by a sparrow hawk, so obviously the three of us could be part of a sparrow hawk at one point. And that's the way the world goes round."

The 55-year-old presenter's decision to be buried with his pets comes after he revealed last year that they'd actually saved him from committing suicide.

He explained: "For me, it's a means of dealing with a very personal relationship while remaining pragmatic about science. There is nothing spiritual, I have no soul. I don't believe in anything like that. But I do know that everything is recycled and I just rather like the idea of being recycled with them.

"Because collectively we had such joy in those woods. Right now, Itchy is in a freezer in my barn but in time, someone will have the job of mixing us together and scattering us underneath our favourite tree where we used to sit."

Chris was first struck down with suicidal thoughts in 2003 shortly after his one-year-old dog Fish passed away.
