The 39-year-old actress has made a career out of playing hairdresser Maria, having first arrived on the cobbles in 2000, and couldn't believe the results of a survey which revealed that her character had been involved in 16 romances over the years, placing her just behind Ken Barlow.

She said: "I actually thought there would be more than 16! In 21 years I’m pretty sure there are more than 16. And I’m just behind Ken, that’s some company to be in, isn’t it?”

The soap star - who is married to 'Dancing on Ice' professional skater Sylvain Longchambon, 41 - admitted that her own life is very different to her 'Corrie' alter ego's.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: " I wouldn’t cope with Maria’s life, I’m the complete opposite. She’s got a good heart, but she doesn’t make the best decisions. She goes all in and doesn’t do things by halves and that includes men.

"Maria’s life is often chaotic, but I’m happy being at home. My perfect evening is staying in with Freya, Sylvain and Yves, having dinner, watching a box set and just chilling out."

Having spent more than two decades on the ITV soap, it's no surprise that Maria has had her fair share of lovers.

She had an affair with Charlie Stubbs in 2005, which eventually led to his murder by scorned girlfriend Tracy Barlow.

Maria then went on to marry Liam Connor, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident before going on to date his killer and even managed to seduce gay man Marcus Dent into a relationship.

The character is currently married to Street bad boy Gary Windass, played by Mikey North

On her character, Samia added: "She’s just a bit of a hopeless romantic who has just been searching for her prince all these years. She chooses the wrong guys. She’s been out with murderers, she’s been cheated on so many times and she’s had affairs. She definitely doesn’t have the best track record."
