CBS are officially sending CSI off in a wave of glory, announcing today that the series is to end its 15 years on air with a special movie event on Sunday, September 27. Original cast members including Marg Helgenberger and William Petersen are amongst those coming back for the final outing.

As a huge hit following its debut in 2000, the show averaged 20 million viewers before the end of season one and ranked amongst television's top ten shows. Season five saw it hit a peak of 26 million viewers, pushing it to go on and launch spinoffs CSI: Miami, CSI: NY and CSI: Cyber.

The cancellation has been rumoured for some time now since CBS trimmed season 15's episode order from 22 to 18. CSI ended last year with an average audience of eight million.
