The newsreader has joined forces with presenter Helen Skelton, 40, for the Channel 5 adventures series, which sees them embark on a trek across the 268-mile walking trail The Pennine Way and Dan admitted it wasn't all smooth sailing.

Dan, 46, told The Mirror: "There were a few tears along the way but mostly you have a nice hug, then you crack on. If anything it was more about fear because I hate heights and I don't really like horses.

"I had to abseil down a 100-metre cave and go on the back of a horse, but I'm now best friends with a horse called Roger and I made it to the bottom of the cave," Dan said. "As for the emotional side of it, if you're with somebody for six weeks you go through the full range of emotions - serious, silly and everything in between."

Dan recently took to Twitter to reveal when the show will air.

He wrote: "Some news for you all… our Pennine Adventure will start on Channel Five on Tuesday, August 15 at 9pm. Can’t wait for you to watch it and thanks again to everyone who was either on it or came and said ‘hello'."

Commissioning editor of Factual Entertainment, Daniel Pearl, said in a statement: "We’re so glad to be able to bring Dan and Helen together for this series. Their friendship, talent and sense of adventure will bring a unique perspective as they take our audience on an immersive journey through the diverse landscapes and towns of the Pennine Way.”
