Netflix has officially given the go ahead for a second season of Daredevil, with the show making its return on the streaming service next year. When Marvel TV first announced that they'd be expanding into the platform's world, the idea was that four individual shows including A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist as well as Daredevil would air in succession, with a team-up Defenders miniseries coming after. That plan may now have been altered however with Daredevil coming back in 2016.

Changes will be made when the now-confirmed second season will debut. Steven S. DeKnight will not be returning as showrunner, with Doug Petrie (American Horror Story, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Da Vinci's Demons, Sons of Anarchy) acting in the role instead. Netflix have stressed that the pair "worked closely" with DeKnight throughout season one, and both have writing credits on two episodes.

Creator Drew Goddard will still have his "in name only" executive producer credit and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb returns as executive producer. Petrie and Ramirez are also being upped to executive producers, with DeKnight releasing a statement about why he's gone from the show completely.

He says: "While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with 'Daredevil' into its second season, I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can't wait to see what they do with the show moving forward."

A.K.A. Jessica Jones is well into production with an expected debut later this year, and a showrunner has just been hired for Luke Cage to presumably follow next year, but will that now be delayed? That's still to be confirmed. I suppose there's nothing to stop two series airing at the same time, with nods to one another glazed throughout.

With this news now potentially disrupting the plans to sprinkle in three new heroes and create the Defenders series, are you pleased to know a second season will premiere next year or a little put off? Let us know in the comments below.
