David Cardy returns to Birds of a Feather

David Cardy is returning for a one-off appearance in Birds of a Feather.

The actor - who played Chris Theodopolopodous in the original BBC series - will make an appearance on the revived show on ITV next month.

Chris will ask his estranged wife, Sharon Theodopolopodous (Pauline Quirke), for a divorce after finding himself a new girlfriend called Angie.

David originated the role of Sharon's criminal husband when the classic sitcom first launched in 1989. However, he was later replaced by Peter Polycarpou, who played Chris between 1990 and 1994.

The actor then reprised the role in the show's final years on BBC, appearing in a handful of episodes in 1997 and 1998.

'Birds of a Feather' - which also stars Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph - has been a ratings hit for ITV since it revived the show after 15 years.

ITV picked up eight episodes of the show after BBC only offered producers a one-off Christmas special.

Linda previously told BANG Showbiz: "We wanted to go to the BBC. The writers and producers went along to the BBC and they commissioned a script; they saw the script and loved the script, and they commissioned it as a Christmas special.

"We just felt that we've been away for so long - 15 years - and for people to get used to the characters again, people that have never seen the series before, you'd need more than one episode. ITV offered eight episodes, so we went for [that]. We thought with the eight episodes at least we get a chance to get to know the characters."
