The 42-year-old presenter is being lined up to front the new primetime programme 'Live at the Trattoria' on Fridays alongside Italian celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo as the pair slip on their aprons for some fun and games in the kitchen.

A source explained to The Sun newspaper: "Bosses have high hopes for him across ITV. If the pilot of 'Live at the Trattoria' is a success they will order a series - meaning he will have two weekend shows."

Dermot's new gig comes just a few days after it was announced he's been in discussions with bosses at ITV about the possibility of returning to 'The X Factor', which he quit in 2014 after nearly a decade at the helm, following the news replacement hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs, who took over from the legendary presenter last year, had bowed out.

An insider said recently: "We want the show to be bigger and better than last year and one thing that people really missed was Dermot. He is as much part of 'The X Factor' as Simon Cowell for most people so it makes sense to approach him about returning.

"Dermot is thinking things through and a big money deal will be offered to try to tempt him back. Nothing is signed but It is looking like a distinct possibility that he will return which is great news for viewers and for Dermot as he has missed working on one of the biggest shows on TV."
