The BBC show picked up the Best Drama prize at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on Tuesday night (23.01.18) following a successful second season, and bosses are said to have been given the "green light" to start thinking about another run.

A BBC source said: "After its ratings success last year commissioners were always keen for it to come back and although its early days they have given it the green light."

Suranne Jones, who plays the female lead, GP Gemma Foster, in the series also won big at the NTAs, taking home the Best Drama Performance, and while she is currently "extremely busy" working on other projects, it is thought filming could start as early as 2019.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: "Suranne is extremely busy with other projects at the moment but bosses are trying to pin her down for some potential filming dates.

"It's looking like it would film next year at the earliest."

Suranne has remained coy on the chances of 'Doctor Foster' returning for another series.

She said: "You should never say never because if I say I'm not doing it, then I rule that out, so I'm not saying no. But we're busy. I'm filming until December 2018, so I'm not even free until 2019."

Last year, write Mike Bartlett admitted the drama series was far from certain to return to TV in the coming years, but admitted the show had the "potential" for another set of episodes.

Reflecting on the finale to season two, he said: "You can see the ending. Tom's gone. So there's a question mark. In a way that is a question mark at the end. And I think it works as an end to this series and all the things that have been going on. Clearly there's potential there. But obviously there would have to be lots of conversations.

"We need to talk - Suranne and I and lots of other people need to have lots of conversations and we'll see."

The second series ended with Gemma and her cheating husband Simon Foster's (Bertie Carvel) son Tom (Tom Taylor) running away to live his life without his parents.

One of the final scenes saw Gemma looking at pictures of Tom on Missing Person announcements.
