The Wizard of Oz is getting a small screen makeover, with Emerald City debuting for viewers in America next year. on Friday, January 6 on NBC.

In what looks to be a dark and gritty remake, the network have given their first glimpse as to what to expect when the series premieres.

Released by Access Hollywood, the trailer sees a Scottish warrior offering advice to Dorothy, whilst the story's 'scarecrow' is first seen on a crucifix, potentially becoming a love interest for the female lead.

Pacific Rim 2 star Adria Arjona is Dorothy, starring alongside Ana Ularu, Mido Hamada, Joely Richardson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Gerran Howell and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.

The Fall's Tarsem Singh will direct the first 10 episodes of the series with David Shulner and Matthew Arnold, with the trio looking to focus heavily on magic throughout. There is also mention in the first two minute teaser of "a clash between science and magic", with plenty of hints as to how fantasy will be playing a major part in the story.

This could either be the next big hit for television, allowing NBC to lay their claim to a major fan favourite, or could backfire in the network's face if purist fans think the story divulges too much from the original. Which way exactly this will go remains to be seen.

Emerald City debuts in the US on Friday, January 6 on NBC. No UK broadcaster has yet been confirmed.
