The 49-year-old presenter has been married to retired Scottish rugby union player Kenny, 50, since 2001 , explained that she was "shocked" to learn back in February that her husband was symptom-free and still training right up until the day before he had to go an operation.

She said: "I think that was the shocking thing for both of us, that the day before he went in for his operation, I’m jumping forwards a bit, he’d done a bike session. He had no pain, he had no symptoms. And to go in and have surgery, which is a really invasive surgery and it obviously takes a long time to recover from, you’re going to feel a lot worse after it. But very, very, very lucky."

The former Wasps player - who has twins Lois and Reuben, 17, with his TV star wife - explained that he went for an ordinary checkup and "literally fell over" when a biopsy revealed he had cancer.

Speaking on 'The Mid Point with Gabby Logan', he said: "“I went to get a wellness check. I sat down with the guy and he said ‘Everything’s fine, your hormones are fine, but your PSA [prostate-specific antigen] is high.' I said, ‘What does that mean?’. He said, ‘It’s to do with your prostate, you should probably get checked’. So I got checked and very quickly within about three or four months I had a biopsy and they said, ‘There’s something there but we’ll just keep an eye on it’.

"It’s hard because when you’re told you’ve got cancer — I literally fell over. I didn’t see it coming, no symptoms whatsoever, I had to go looking for it."

Kenny was given the choice of radiotherapy or surgery and explained that he is very nearly back to normal after having his prostate removed completely.

He added: "I ended up deciding to take it out. So I'm now three months since the operation, had the prostate out. And I'm probably 95 per cent back to normal, maybe 90% back to normal."
