With Game of Thrones' sixth season just on the horizon, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are already looking forward to seasons 7 and 8 - the ones they're likely to close with - and told Variety in a new interview that the seasons are likely to be shorter in length than their predecessors.

Benioff explained: "I think we're down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We're heading into the final lap. That's the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that's what we're looking at."

Despite the claims, HBO were quick to issue their own statement which read: "Any conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative. As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season 7."

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo added: "That's my understand from them right now, those have been the conversations we've had, because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them. As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do. I'm always an optimist, and I do believe we will figure this out."

Game of Thrones returns for its season 6 premiere on HBO in the US on Sunday, April 24, simulcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic and shown in the UK on Mondays at 9pm thereafter.
