Branching out further into original material as the timeline in the show overtakes where we're up to in George R.R. Martin's book series, fans can't wait to see what's up the sleeves of those in charge.

Speaking to BGR.com, Bender said: "[Showrunners] Dan Weiss and David Benioff are enormously brilliant and unpretentious guys, and I know they communicate closely [with Martin]".

Best-known for taking on 38 episodes of Lost, Bender will direct a block of two episodes - episodes 5 and 6 - during the new season, but revealed this wasn't the first time he'd been asked to do the show.

Saying he'd turned it down in the past due to time constraints, he said: "You have to commit to four-and-a-half to six months [for the shoot] because of the enormity of the episodes."

Production on the new season will arrive in the coming weeks in Belfast, with episodes also partly being shot in Spain.

Early 2016 sees the show's return to HBO and Sky Atlantic.
