With the final events of season five playing out earlier this week, the last episode broke hearts across the world but also HBO ratings according to TVByTheNumbers.

The site claims that episode 10 of season 5 drew 8.1 million viewers, ever-so-slightly breaking the season 5 premiere's record of 8 million and setting a new series high.

In terms of ratings however the finale was down a tenth from the season premiere getting a 4.1 in the 18-49 demographic.

A great improvement from the days of the first season where the finale hit a high of 3.04 million viewers, Game of Thrones has become HBO's most popular series of all time, getting its greatest single-season jump in viewership during its third season.

Though season five has had some fluctuations in numbers throughout its run, those recorded won't be entirely accurate as thousands still decide to pirate the series despite HBO's launch of an online-only service earlier in the year.

From this point on it will be interesting to see where things go as progress is made outside of the books. Season 6 is said to be the penultimate one in the series, so it wouldn't be surprising if figures grew even more.

Game of Thrones returns next year.
