There are rumours that Warner Bros., the studio behind The Batman, are developing a Pennywise TV series that will centre around the creepy clown and the curse he placed on Derry, Maine.

The IT films (2017 and 2019) are some of the best horror films out there, with Pennywise the Dancing Clown being a terrifying yet comical villain, to say the least.

IT: Chapter Two saw a brief reveal of where Pennywise came from, and the Losers Club took part in an ancient ritual in order to take him down; but where is the shapeshifting villain actually from?

HBO Max is supposedly developing an IT prequel show that may shed more light on Pennywise’s backstory. With both films in the franchise doing incredibly well, it was perhaps only a matter of time before the clown came back.

There is next to no chance of a third film being made, mainly due to the fact that the author of IT, Stephen King, never wrote a sequel, suggesting that the author thought it best to leave Pennywise where he ended up – dead.

However, just because his journey ended in the 2019 movie, doesn’t mean that Pennywise can’t return. There are reports (from The Ankler) that the series is tentatively named Welcome to Derry, and is expected to see the harrowing clown return as we explore his origins, and the 27-year-long curse he imposed on the town.

While it is not known if the show has been green-lit by HBO Max, or if any recognisable cast members from the films will be taking part, there is news that the series may be taking place in the 1960s, and a writer’s room has been gathered.

Many may be relieved to hear there won’t be a third IT film, as the Losers Clubs’ stories all ended happily (well, almost all of them), and continuing one of their stories wouldn’t make much sense.

If Welcome to Derry is indeed given the go ahead, it will be hard to imagine Bill Skarsgård not being cast for Pennywise. His performance is both features was outstanding, and he was the perfect choice for the carnivorous clown.
