The 45-year-old actor has portrayed the suave businessman on and off since 2006, but he's worried it may be the end of the road for his alter ego after bosses made the drastic decision to write out his on-screen daughters Lauren and Abi Branning (Jacqueline Jossa and Lorna Fitzgerald) in a bid to revitalise the show for 2018.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he said: "Obviously them leaving will affect Max in a massive way. I'm waiting to hear what will happen. The Branning family is shrinking - there's just a couple of us left now. There's no guarantees."

But the hunk will be devastated if he's given the chop as he thoroughly enjoys his job.

He explained: "I'm 100 per cent committed to the show as I love the job and I love the character but I have no idea what is going to happen with Max."

However, just three months ago, Jake hinted that his character's revenge plot, which has seen him mess up the lives of those who have hurt him over the years - including his brother Jack (Scott Maslen), will play out over years rather than months.

He said recently: "All the best storylines that people enjoy are mapped out over a long period. With Max and Stacey [their affair] - that was always a three-year storyline and Max's revenge is going to play out for at least that long, hopefully."

Meanwhil, fans were left devastated earlier this month when it was revealed that Abi and Lauren would be leaving Walford in an explosive storyline over the festive season.

A source said recently: "He [the new producer John Yorke] has form for creating huge plots, so they're in safe hands over their departure. It will be one of the biggest on-screen moments of the year. Sometimes a great storyline comes at the cost of losing some characters. The cast will be sorry to see them go."
