The ‘You’re Beautiful’ hitmaker found his stint sitting on the panel alongside Guy Sebastian, 41, Dannii Minogue, 51, Chris Isaak, 67, the year Cyrus Villanueva was victorious on the Aussie version of the talent show “quite painful” as it felt like ruining people’s dreams for “ratings”.

The 49-year-old singer told the online edition of the Radio Times: "I didn't enjoy it, and I struggle with 'The X Factor', because it's more TV show than music competition.

"The winners are always the judges' choices rather than the ones who do best each week.

"Seeing these hopefuls with their 15 minutes, and their dreams shattered for ratings, I find quite painful."

James had some tense on-air exchanges with his fellow judges and spent just one series on the show in 2015, but he did thank his co-stars during the finale.

He said at the time: ‘‘Thank you Australia for having me. Thank you to you in the audience, thank you to you on the panel.

"It's really hard, it’s easy to come in and think you’ll know the right thing to do.

"But I learnt a lot from Guy and Dannii and their help and guidance across the series. I think both Chris and I learnt a lot from seeing them in action."

Meanwhile, the Brit Award winner recently shared the wisdom his father, Colonel Charles Blount, passed onto him as he advised “life is not a dress rehearsal”.

James previously told The Guardian newspaper: “Life is not a dress rehearsal. My father gave me that advice. Go out there, do everything. It’s why I got into music. I had the dream and didn’t want to grow old with regret.”
