The 57-year-old TV presenter now understands why the 53-year-old chef is foul mouthed in the kitchen now and again, after he filmed a cooking show of his own, titled ‘Oh Cook!’.

Asked if he now sympathises with Gordon, James told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: “Utterly. I didn’t use to. I used to think, ‘Come on Gordon, stop being such a ponce’.

“But I think, ‘No Gordon’s absolutely right,’ and in a big fight I’d be on Gordon’s side against all those crew people, it would be me and Gordon batting them off. I’m amazed he’s tolerated it for so long.”

However, ‘The Grand Tour’ host forgot to tell his co-stars, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, about his new show until he had already filmed the series.

He said: “To be honest, I didn’t tell them. I didn't really tell anybody apart from a few close mates.

“And I remember a few weeks ago, or it was probably a month or two ago, Clarkson said to me, he says, ‘Oh, are you doing this cooking show then?’ And I said, ‘No, I've already done it. It's delivered.’”

Jeremy was “amazed” that James had snuck off and completed the programme.

James said: “And he went, 'Is it?’ He was amazed that I sneaked off and made a cooking show. I don't know why he thought I'd tell him, in particular (but) yes, we did. We did it.

“We were quite efficient. We filmed it quite quickly. The edit took quite a long time. And because Amazon agreed to buy it, we formatted it to 4K. And that's, you know, quite a laborious process but we actually for once in our lives were quite efficient.”
