The 66-year-old screenwriter, who is the mastermind behind the hit period drama, has admitted he deliberately left the doors to the Yorkshire estate open slightly following its successful finale last month in case he decides to pen a film about the aristocratic Crawley family in the forthcoming years.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, he said: "I'm completely up for a movie, I'd love to do a movie. I think it would be good fun but there are all sorts of things that have to be settled. The per cent chance of making the film is about 64.5."

And, although he's yet to make a solid decision on the film, Julian has admitted he's already got some ideas lined up.

He said: "I think I know what the spine of a story for a film would be. I think it would be fun, in a sense, because we'd be making it on a film budget."

However, the talented actor has "mixed feelings" about the prospect of the movie because of the potential pitfalls.

He said previously: "Normally they're not very good because the film producer says, 'Oh, it's not going to be anything like the series,' and of course what you want is for it to be exactly like the series. I hope we would avoid that error in doing one, but I do have mixed feelings about it."
