The 45-year-old actress - who is currently appearing in a UK stage adaptation of the 1989 drama 'Steel Magnolias' - has starred as Shelagh Turner in the BBC medical period drama since it began in 2012 and explained that she still loves being in the series as plans have been made for it to air until at least 2026.

She said: "When I finish this tour, I go into series 13. We'd known about that for a while and that had been lovely having that knowledge but as we got closer I thought 'Oh gosh, what's going to happen?' But we've just found out there will be a series 14 and a series 15, which means that it is going to be on television until 2026 and it means that we will go into the 1970s.

The musical theatre star went on to explain the show has been kept "fresh" because it moves forward with time as it enters the 1970s and explores various changes in fashion and society with every new block of episodes.

Speaking on ITV's 'Lorraine', she told stand-in host Christine Lampard: "We started the show, it was 1957 and I think that's one of the things that keeps it fresh. Every series you move forward a year in time, the fashions change and society changes. It's always reinvented slightly and it's still exciting for me. I love making it. I think part of that is the reception that it gets."
