The 'Line of Duty' actor has been cast as Dr Robert Traill in ITV's critically-acclaimed show based on the life of Queen Victoria - who is played by Jenna Coleman - and will be seen on screens when the next instalment makes a return in the autumn.

According to the Radio Times Online, Traill was a key campaigner in the petition to gain awareness and support of the potato famine in Ireland during the 1840s.

And Martin isn't the only new face to grace the period drama as Dame Diana Rigg, of 'Game of Thrones', Emerald Fennell from 'Call the Midwife', Jo Stone-Fewings from 'The Hollow Crown', 'Maleficent' star Leo Suter and Michael Maloney have also joined.

Bruno Wolkowitch, the French actor from Gallic drama 'Spin' will also guest-star in the second series as French King Louis Philippe who Queen Victoria visits in France.

The new series sees the queen face the challenge of motherhood and reportedly picks up six weeks after the first series ended in October with the monarch trying to balance her responsibilities as a parent and a famous figure.

The second series of the show went into production in February as Jenna reunited with her co-stars Tom Hughes, David Oakes, Nell Hudson and Eve Myles, to name a few, in London.

ITV bosses were given the go ahead to do another series last year - just weeks after its debut on screen last September - and a festive special this year is also in the pipeline.

Jenna explained previously: "We're doing season two and then it's a question of where we go from there. There's no shortage of story. You don't want to go through it too quickly. There are nine children to have, so there is a long way to go."
