Matt Smith "intimidated" by Doctor Who role offer.
Matt Smith felt "intimidated" when he was first offered the lead role in 'Doctor Who', especially since he was the youngest actor to ever play the titular Time Lord.
The 31-year-old star was the youngest actor to ever play the titular Time Lord in the BBC One show when he took to the screens in January 2009 to replace David Tennant, and was initially slightly nervous about taking up the part of the much loved character.
Quizzed on how he felt when he was offered the part, he told Nuts magazine: "Intimidated. It's wonderful to be part of a show that has such a legacy behind it. But I don't know ... It was strange because there was such an uproar, as everyone was like, 'He can't be the Doctor, he's like ... nine year's old!' So it was bizarre."
Matt - who bows out from his role after the Christmas special - never consciously tried to make his character have his youthfulness, claiming instead he tried "sort of, the opposite".
He added: "I've actually tried to explore the thousand year-ness of him. Because what intrigues me is that if you think of all the blood on his hands over the centuries, all the empires he's had to watch burn or slip away, all the companions he's lost - that's why he dances around the world with a smile. If he didn't it'll all be too much. So in terms of being youthful, I've never consciously tried to make him young - sort of the opposite. I don't know if I've failed or succeeded."
