The 'Emmerdale' actor - who plays Ross Barton on the ITV show - is up for the coveted prize alongside 'Coronation Street's' Simon Gregson and David Neilson as well as Adam Woodyatt and Danny Dyer from 'EastEnders'.

He hopes that the two soaps' fans will be divided with their nominations, leaving all the Dales' viewers to back him and land him the award.

He said: "There's a one in five chance of me winning it. But I feel like I've got a good chance.

"There's two from 'EastEnders' and two from 'Coronation Street' and only me from here and unfortunately no one from 'Hollyoaks'.

"I'm trying to look at it mathematically thinking there's two from 'EastEnders' so their votes might get divided and the 'Coronation Street' votes might get divided so hopefully if you're an 'Emmerdale' fan you will all vote for me. Fingers crossed. Maybe I've over-analysing it."

Even if he doesn't win, Michael - who was up for Best Newcomer last year - is honoured to be nominated alongside so many acting veterans.

Speaking to Mirror Online, he said: "I kind feel that I've graduated a little bit. Last year it was all about being the best newcomer.

"Especially with who else is nominated, they are all characters who have been established for years for way over 10 years, apart from Danny Dyer but he's had a successful career in film before that, so I feel like I'm playing with the big boys now."

The 2015 British Soap Awards take place on May 16.
