Though it's always been a popular watch for people on Netflix, Mindhunter looks to have already aired its final episodes.
The series' executive producer David Fincher said at the start of 2020 that he was unsure about the show's future, but has now told Vulture he considers the show "probably" done.
It came when Netflix admitted the show's cast - including Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv - were being allowed to pursue other work, rather than waiting to hear about a potential third season.
Fincher continued: "Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about, 'Finish Mank [Fincher's Netflix drama] and then see how you feel', but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs."
Speaking about his experiences with Mindhunter to date, he added: "It's a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don't know if I have it in me right now to break Season 3.'"
"We lived [in Pittsburgh] for almost three years. Not year in and year out, but... probably six or seven months a year... Mindhunter was a lot for me."
A spokesperson for Netflix did keep the dream alive, but for the foreseeable future, it's done.
"Maybe in five years," they said.
The psychological crime drama was based on the true-crime book of the same name, subtitled Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit.
Created by Joe Penhall, it starred Cameron Britton as serial killer Ed Kemper, and Happy Anderson as Jerry Brudos.
The character Holden Ford (Groff) was loosely based on John E. Douglas, who served as an FBI agent and co-authored the book on which the show is based.
Bill Tench (McCallany) was also based on a real-life agent, Robert K. Ressler.
Getting a glimpse inside the world of the FBI and their workings, in the days when serial killers were to be studied intensely, was a great experience for audiences.
Many who loved the show have taken to Twitter to voice their upset at the news. One even offered to sell their kidney to help fund the show.
