As one of the world's most powerful services, Netflix has up to this point provided some of the biggest television shows and movies to consumers, and now promises a huge original expansion moving into 2016.

The next 12 months will see the entertainment giant produce 31 scripted series, 30 children's series, 10 feature films and a number of different documentaries and comedy specials.

With shows such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Narcos all already exclusive to those who subscribe to Netflix, the service has produced 16 different scripted series in the past year - a number they want to double.

"This is high quality stuff", says Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "This is programming people want to watch." And after the recent release of Marvel's Jessica Jones, it looks like the fans and critics agree.

Pumping a large chunk of their money into original projects, it's clear the streaming leaders know what they're doing, with stock prices still on the rise.

Competition will of course do its best and is also looking on making bigger moves than in the past, with Hulu offering ad-free streaming and YouTube opening their own wallets to purchase movies and television shows.

Amazon Prime has done well with original programming, and has arguably one of the biggest shows of the past few years with Golden Globe-winning series Transparent.

If the future of television has ever looked sketchy, nowadays it seems to be clearer than ever. The future is streaming, and the future is now.
