The Omen is one of the horror genres most exciting franchises, having scared audiences since its Richard Donner release back in 1976. Spawning a subgenre of the 'killer kid film', the movie also brought forward the concept of the Antichrist and due to such success, a series of sequels were born.

Now though, Damien Thorn - this time played by Bradley James - will be returning to screens, but those a little smaller, in a new A&E series debuting next year.

Taking place 25 years after the events of the original film, Damien will focus on the 30-year-old Antichrist's return to his childhood home, as Damien kickstarts his journey toward bringing about the apocalypse.

Showrunner Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) has decided that the only movie in his universe will be the original, which means Damien still has no idea about what he can really do and who he really is.

Barbara Hershey's character Ann Rutledge will be guiding his path, becoming his protector and guardian in the years following the death of Damien's parents.

Chatting about the show, Mazzara said to THR: "I think 'Damien' is cutting-edge material. It's trying to push the boundaries as far as violence and horror go. There's a lot of really great drama on TV and that was not the case in 1976 when the film came out. So the bar is set so high given other great horror shows that are on TV. We have our work cut out for us; everybody is really interested in pushing the boundaries. I think we've got a few episodes that people are going to be talking about."
