The 55-year-old England footballing legend - affectionately known as 'Gazza' - will be seen on new Channel 4 programme 'Scared of the Dark’ star, in which he and a host of other celebs have to live, eat and sleep in complete darkness, whilst also being tested with challenges.

Gazza admits he isn't a big watched of reality shows and he doesn't approve nepo babies cashing in on their famous surnames, even though his own brood have done so.

Stepdaughter Bianca Gascoigne, 36, was one of the original 'Love Island' stars and has also appeared on 'Celebrity Coach Trip' and 'Celebrity Big Brother', whilst his son Regan, 27, competed on the latest series of ‘Dancing on Ice’.

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper's Hot TV column, he said: “I see all the other reality shows. Some of them I don’t like watching because there’s some people that are on there are not even famous… they’re on there because of mum and dad.

Gazza - who scored 10 goals in his 57 games for England and had a distinguished club career at teams such as Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers and Newcastle United - decided to go on the new series because he is “competitive person” and wanted the opportunity to test himself.

He said: “I want to give it the full whack and go all the way. I’m a competitive person.”

Danny Dyer is the host of 'Scared of the Dark' which begins this Sunday (16.04.23) and also features former 'I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!’ winner Scarlett Moffatt, ex ‘Love Island’ star Chloe Burrows and The Wanted’s Max George among others.

Former 'EastEnders' actor Danny, 45, insists Gazza is going to surprise a lot of viewers with his "journey" on the programme.

Danny said: “He didn’t know I was the host. He was like, ‘Ah, f****** hell, I don’t know if I want to do it now.’ You think he’s not going to last a half hour, but let me tell you something now, he’s got an amazing journey in there.”

During the show, Gary admits he is lucky to be alive.

He says: “People keep saying, ‘You’ve got more lives than a cat.’

"That’s because I have. I’ve had near-death experiences, I’ve had 36 operations, I’ve died a couple of times, and they’ve put me in a coma for 18 days. So I’ve come through all that, so hopefully, this’ll be a little bit easier.”
