The TV presenter - who hosts ITV show 'For The Love of Dogs' - was attacked by a puppy who whacked him in the mouth when he was taking a walk in his local park.

He said: "There was a Great Dane puppy, nearly seven-foot standing on his hind paws, and he came straight into the park, took one look at me, and punched me straight in the mouth. Not patting me with his paw. Full blown bang, like David Haye, straight in the gob."

The star - who rose to prominence as Lily Savage in the 1980s - admitted he received zero sympathy from onlookers.

He is quoted by The Sun newspaper's TV Biz column as saying: “If it was anybody else on telly, they’d all be saying ‘Are you alright? Would you like anything?’ Not me.”

The former teatime chat show host, 66, has always been a lover of dogs and famously featured his canine companions on his show - most notably his four-legged friend Buster, who made regular appearances on 'The Paul O'Grady' show until the canine's death in 2009.

Paul has hosted nine series of 'For The Love of Dogs', which sees him meet members of the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home staff to talk about the animals in their care.

It comes soon after Paul, 66, made a return to Saturday night television with a new series called 'Paul O'Grady's Saturday Night Line Up', in which he invites celebrities to find out what the public really think of them.

So far, guests on the series have included Spice Girls star Mel B, 46, former 'Corrie' actress Sally Lindsay, 48, and 'Britain's Got Talent' judge Amanda Holden, 50.
