Peter Capaldi made a surprise appearance in the 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary special.
The 55-year-old actor is taking over the role of the Time Lord from current Doctor Matt Smith in this year's Christmas special but he made a brief cameo at the end of 'The Day of the Doctor', which aired last night. (23.11.13).
Peter's eyes flashed on screen inside his TARDIS as his Doctor and all the previous incarnations of the Time Lord worked together to save their home planet of Gallifrey from a massive attack by the Daleks during the Time War.
His was not the only surprise cameo as Tom Baker - who played the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1981 - appeared as a mysterious version of the Doctor apparently from the future but re-using the appearance of an old regeneration and now working as the curator of art at the National Gallery in London.
The Curator sets Eleventh Doctor Matt on a journey to find his home planet of Gallifrey, which although saved is now lost.
The two cameos and the appearance of all the Doctors, albeit on screen, was a huge thrill for fans as showrunner Steven Moffat had for months denied the appearance of any actors who controlled the TARDIS during the show's classic run from 1963 to 1989.
The show - which was watched by 10.2 million viewers in the UK - also made its mark on the Guinness World Record book for the biggest TV drama simulcast in history.
Not only was it broadcast in 94 countries across 6 continents, 'The Day of the Doctor' was also seen in over 1,500 cinemas around the world.
Commenting on the award, Steven said: "For years the Doctor has been stopping everyone else from conquering the world. Now, just to show off, he's gone and done it himself!"
