Nobody really knew what to expect when Peter Kay’s Car Share hit the small screen last year. Though many knew of the comedian because of his work on the stage and in past shows such as Phoenix Nights, they wondered whether his comedy would be one that worked in a modern day. Fortunately for him, it not only worked, but earned the new series rave reviews.

Now back for a second series, the comedian returns with four episodes starring himself and co-star Sian Gibson as John and Kayleigh respectively. What he didn’t expect however was for fans to really get behind the pair’s romantic chemistry.

Speaking to Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2, the actor said: “There is an undercurrent of romance but I don’t want it to be Just Good Friends. Not that I didn’t like Just Good Friends, I loved it. But they did circle around each other for a good few series.

“It just developed into this. I didn’t realise people would think of it more as a romance. That’s what is more intriguing about it – unrequited love or people who very much want to be loved and would love to be in love but are frightened of getting hurt.”

He added: “They want to say it but they’re just so frightened that if they’ll say it they’ll get rejected, so the easy option is just not to say it. ‘If I don’t get involved, I won’t get hurt.’ But really they just want to be in love.”

Peter Kay’s Car Share is available in its entirety on BBC iPlayer, and concludes with its final episode next Tuesday, May 2 at 9pm on BBC One.
