The 44-year-old presenter was involved in a long-running rivalry with Piers, 55, before he quit 'Good Morning Britain', but Dan acknowledges that Piers helped to transform the fortunes of the ITV show.

He said: "Piers and I have had a friendly rivalry, but it has been good for 'BBC Breakfast' and 'GMB'.

"He likes to throw a few insults around, but underneath all the froth I think there is a decent bloke fighting to get out.

"They are very different programmes and I’ve always said 'GMB' do a good job."

Dan and Piers loved to exchange insults on social media, and the BBC presenter is happy that he's seen as the "more measured" of the two.

He told the Sunday Times newspaper: "Our styles are very different, but the idea that you’ve not done a good job unless you demand resignations and rant at the interviewee is laughable.

"I don’t want you to know my opinion. I have no problem being seen as the more measured presenter."

Meanwhile, Dan previously poked fun at Piers following his exit from 'Good Morning Britain'.

Dan mocked the outspoken TV presenter by joking he could appear on 'BBC Breakfast' if he wanted to speak about his 'GMB' departure.

He wrote on Twitter: "Sorry to hear the news about your departure from GMB @piersmorgan

"If you’d like to come on the UK’s number 1 breakfast show to talk about it... we could make some space for you in the morning (sic)"

Prior to that, Dan poked fun at Piers for storming off set after he clashed with 'GMB' weather reporter Alex Beresford.

He quote retweeted a selfie with 'BBC Breakfast' co-host Louise Minchin, and wrote: "This was taken a few seconds before I stormed off set because Carol said it was going to be chilly this weekend."
