The 'Good Morning Britain' star announced on his Twitter account that he will remain with the station for at least two more years after inking a new contract to keep him on the breakfast show with co-host Susanna Reid.

The deal also includes two more series of his interview show 'Life Stories'.

Piers tweeted: "BREAKING NEWS*. After weeks of frenzied global, possibly galactic speculation, I'm delighted to announce I've just signed a new 2-year deal with ITV to co-present @GMB & two more 5-part series of Life Stories (sic)."

He jokingly added: "What could be a better Christmas present for the nation?"

Piers, 54, joined 'Good Morning Britain' in 2015 and previously revealed he is determined to remain on the programme until he's beaten rival BBC's 'Breakfast' in the ratings war - even though he thinks they're at an advantage because they don't have to run commercial breaks or competitions.

Asked if he will rest until he's beaten the BBC's viewing figures, he replied: "No. No. But they're the BBC they don't have to run commercials, they don't have to competitions. It's a totally different dynamic and we are in a way behind them as things stand but we're a lot closer to them than we were two and half years ago. That's interesting to me that we've managed to close the gap pretty significantly."

And just last month he took to Twitter to taunt presenter Dan Walker after 'GMB' edged closer to 'BBC Breakfast' in the ratings.

He tweeted: "BREAKING: Yesterday's @GMB was 76k viewers & 4 share pts UP on same day last year.@BBCBreakfast was 201k viewers & 3.2 share pts DOWN on same day. Closest gap between the shows since @GMB launched. Thanks for watching!"

He then tweeted Dan directly, writing: 'Hi mate, @mrdanwalker fancy guzzling this [wine] with me to celebrate closest-ever rating gap between @GMB& @BBCBreakfast?"
